Clarke was a member of Dungannon Golf Club alongside acclaimed professional players, before attending Wake Forest University in the United States. Clarke became a professional himself in 1990, and made his golfing debut on the European Tour in 1991, then finished the 1991 Open Championship on 64th place. However, Darren made his big breakthrough in 1993 – during the August-September stretch, he achieved four top-10 finishes in four tournaments. In October of the same year, he won his maiden European title, the Alfred Dunhill Open, and during the year was in the top 10 on seven occasions. In 1994, he had a mediocre season and was in 37th place on the Order of Merit list, but still made 17 out of 21 cuts, made his US Open debut, and in the Open Championship Clarke ended up on 38th place. In 1995 he had better success, scoring seven top 10s in 27tournaments, his best finish being second at the Portuguese Open.

In 1996, Darren won his second European Tour title playing at the Linde German Masters, and was 11th at The Open Championship. In 1998, he achieved his third European Tour title at the Benson and Hedges Open, then Darren became known worldwide after he had won his first World Golf Championship in 2000, in a match against Tiger Woods. Clarke finished his 2001 season in third place on the Order of Merit, and subsequently won the Smurfit European Open. Shortly after that occasion, he finished in third place at the Royal Lytham & St Annes, and third place at the WGC-NEC Invitational, earning €400,000.

In 2002, he finished in second position in the Shell Houston Open, then achieved his ninth Compass Group English Open title. In the 2004 season, Darren’s skills weren’t up to scratch and he didn’t win a single title. Throughout the mid- and late-2000s, he continued to play consistently, with 2008 being the season when he got back into form, winning the BMW Asian Open defeating Robert Jan-Derksen, and achieving another victory at the KLM Open. Clarke’s performance was improved during 2009 and 2010 but didn’t win again until 2011 at the Iberdrola Open. Then he won his only ‘Grand Slam’ tournament at the 2011 British Open.

In conclusion, Clarke has played in 167 events in total, making 104 cuts and 27 top 10 finishes. In 2012, Clarke wrote ‘’An Open Book – My Autobiography’’.

In his personal life, Darren married Heather in 1996. They had two sons, Tyrone and Conor and resided in Sunningdale, Berkshire, UK. His wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, and died on 13 August 2006. In 2012, he married Alison Campbell.
